HOW TO PRUNE HYBRID ROSES WITH STEP BY STEP DIAGRAMS

IT'S VISUALLY EASY
MIDSUMMER BLOOM

SO START WITH A VISUAL

COLD WEATHER WARE BEFORE PRUNING

BEFORE PRUNING

THEN FOLLOW THESE FEW BASIC RULES OF THUMB

.....OR SOME ABSTRACT RULES OF THUMB

KEEP THE 5 STRAIGHTEST AND STRONGEST CANES WHILE OPENING UP THE CENTER

THEN LOCATE THE PARTS OF THE STEM

ALL CUTS WILL BE MADE JUST ABOVE THE NODE

CUTTING AT THE 5TH LEAFLET NODE IS NECESSARY TO PROMOTE A FLOWERING STEM

THEN STUDY THE ANGLES IN WHICH TO CUT AT A NODE FOR OUTWARD BRANCHING

THIS CUT APPEARS TO BE INITIATING INWARD BRANCHING

THIS CUT INITIATES OUTWARD BRANCHING

FINALLY PRUNE
AFTER PRUNING

AFTER PRUNING

TREE ROSE PRUNING IS MUCH THE SAME BUT LEAVING MORE CANES

  1. Hi - Thanks for your great visuals on rose pruning. You referred readers to your post on putting roses to bed; it would be helpful to give readers the date of the post so they can find it in your archives. Thanks again for the pruning help. I inherited some woebegone roses and they are responding well so far, but now it is time to give them some pruning...I feel much more confident now.

  2. Awesome pictures/diagrams! I've got some old antique roses that need a good pruning. I can prune perennials until the cows come home but I've always been confused when and how to prune my roses. You've helped me a lot!
